Overcoming the of Menace of Obesity


Obesity is more serious trouble than we give it credit for. It is one of the main reasons of why the majority population of the world is deemed unhealthy. Our bodies need nutrition and so we have to eat.  But we have to realize that when we over eat, our bodies take in more calories, which if not burned, will accumulate as body fat. When we over eat, we gain weight. When we gain weight, we become obese.

It is considered to be a chronic disease like diabetes or high blood pressure. Consuming more calories than we can burn is what causes obesity. Studies have shown that 1 out of every 5 kid is obese. You would be called obese if your Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 30. Obesity has sadly become an epidemic in most of the developed countries of the world.  Food is in abundant supply but physical activity is minimal.

Billions of dollars are spent on diet pills, diet books, figure correction surgery and the like and even more dollars are spent for treating the diseases which are related to obesity. Excess amount of body fat that gets accumulated when we gain more calories and burn less, it augments other diseases. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties, certain types of cancer and even osteoarthritis are some of the adverse effects of obesity. Who would have thought that an apparently simple issue like obesity could give rise to such life threatening diseases?

There are a number of factors which can be identified as the causes behind obesity. Age is one of those factors. With age, the metabolism rate of the body slows down; it takes more time to metabolize the food. Eating the same food, doing the same activities will now add to your weight which was not the case when you were 20. Gender is another factor behind obesity. Women have been found to gain more weight than men as their post menopausal metabolic rate decreases with time. Obesity has often been found to be in genes.

If you are physically active, obesity is not likely to affect you. Psychological factors also play a role in this regard. We often tend to eat in response to negative emotions like sadness, anxiety, and boredom. Binge eating is the reason behind weight gain in many people, this does not make person realize to what excess he or she is eating. Illness and medication also has been found to be the reason behind obesity. Many medications as a side effect causes weight gain which can only be helped if you are following a proper diet or healthy lifestyle.

Obesity is one of the many dangerous trends catching on. It’s not just people calling you fat and not being able to fit in your jeans you should be worried about. It is the related and subsequent dangers you are becoming vulnerable to.
